National Poetry Month & Cowboy Poetry Week 2011

21/04/11 9:00 AM

I’d be remiss if I didn’t do a shout-out to all the poets out there. Happy National Poetry Month.

And did you know this week is also Cowboy Poetry Week? Stick around, kids. You’ll learn lots of useful gems like this from me. 😉

Seriously, though, I was introduced to cowboy poetry last year for a blog I do some ghostwriting for. (The blog is attached to an e-commerce company that sells western wear.) Here’s more on what cowboy poetry is and what it isn’t.

And now for some fun, here’s Roald Dahl’s “Revolting” Cinderella poem.

Who’s your favorite poet and/or favorite poem? Share in the comments! 🙂

You’d be surprised how many things rhyme with “yeehaw.”

I wish that more people had an appreciation for poetry. The only reason that poetry still exists as an artform in the United States is because of the universities. They are preserving the tradition and teaching young people how to make excellent poetry but let’s face it, no one aside from maybe you or I actually buys these books. It kind of makes me sad that the U.S.A. has no appreciation for it.

@Mike Are you familiar with Ted Kooser’s efforts to bring poetry into the mainstream? Check out American Life in Poetry. It’s because of efforts like this that I have hope for the genre! 🙂
