Movies for Writers – Stand By Me

18/02/11 9:00 AM

I’m sure all writers have that one movie they feel every writer should watch. Mine is Stand By Me, which is based on the Stephen King short story “The Body.”

I love this film for so many reasons: the time in my life when I saw it (aged 13 in 1986), the story itself, and, of course, the whole writer theme. I’m embedding the trailer below. I highly recommend adding this to your Netflix queue if you haven’t seen it yet.

What film do YOU recommend all writers see? Leave your picks in the comments.

You know, I’ve seen pretty much every god-awful adaption of Steven King’s work out there (Langoliers, anybody?), but I’ve somehow failed to see Stand By Me. It shall be remedied! As for a movie rec for writers… huh. Lemme see. I’d have to go with Wonder Boys with Michael Douglas. Ever seen it?

  2. Robyn Says:

Loved Wonder Boys (I still need to read the book) with Michael D and the current Mrs. Cruise.

Definitely check out Stand By Me — and let me know what you think!

  3. Geoffrey Cubbage Says:

Don’t forget “Lawnmower Man,” a film so unrelated to the story that Steven King sued successfully to have his name removed from it!

On the subject of creepy authors, I gotta bookmark this blog rather than redirecting through the parent site. That staring baby cover is just too damn startling to click past every day.

  4. Ghenet Says:

I haven’t seen this but really want to now!

    *adds to Netflix queue*

“Stand By Me” was such a great show. I’m glad you posted this because it really took me down memory lane. I agree with the above poster too about the staring baby…kinda gives me the willies. 😛

  6. Robyn Says:

@Geoffrey and @Michael — the baby freaks ME out. I’ll be swapping it out soon with my new short story that I’m releasing in March.

@Ghenet — be sure to let me know what you think of it if you check it out. 🙂

I recently bought and watched the movie “Stranger than fiction” (2006) I have to admit I really it! It was original… and funny too! The actors who played in it are: Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah & Emma Thompson. For those of you of haven’t seen it, here the link to view the trailer on YouTube:
If you’re a writer, I think you will find this movie entertaining.
